History

RAF West Raynham has it's origins in the 1930s expansion period of the RAF and thus contains much classic archictecture of that period including four "C Type" hangars. Originally a grass airfield, two concrete runways were added in 1943. It was home mainly to twin-engined types during the war. In the post-war period it became home to the Central Fighter Establishment which oversaw the introduction of the early jet fighters such as Vampire, Venom, Hunter and Javelin. Later it operated Canberras and also became a Bloodhound base. It closed in 1994.
