History

RAF Swanton Morley opened in 1940. During the war it operated Blenheims, Mosquitos, Bostons and Mitchells. Wg Cdr Hughie Edwards was awarded the VC whilst operating from here. It was also from here that the first American raid of the war took place. After the war it became an Air Radio School operating Prentices, Proctors and Ansons until 1957. After that the airfield was little used by the RAF but it was home to the Norfolk and Norwich Aero Club. In 1995 the RAF relinquished the site to the army. Their first action was to vandalise the biggest and best grass airfield in the country by turning it into a tank training ground. The NNAC operation transferred to Beccles.
