History

The 44th Bomb Group, "The Flying Eightballs", were the first and longest serving bomb group to be based in Norfolk. They were at Shipdham October 1942 - June 1945. In August 1943 they werw detached to North Africa for the Ploesti raid for which they received a Distinguished Unit citation.
On the night of 3 November 1943 Flight Lieutenant William Reid crash landed his Lancaster at Shipdham, he was returning from a raid on Germany. His exploits on that mission earned him a VC.
Part of the airfield is now used by Shipdham Aero Club.
