History
RAF Sculthorpe opened in 1943 as a typical bomber station with the "A" runway layout, the main runway being 6000ft and the secondary runways of 4200ft. It was used by 2 Group and 100 Group until in 1944 it was closed to be upgraded to Very Heavy Bomber status. In 1949 USAF had B29s stationed here. During the Cold War of the 50/60s Sculthorpe was a major nuclear bomber base. It was from here that operation Jiu Jitsu was mounted. Since the Americans left the base has been used by various units whilst there own airfields have undergone upgrade. The accomadation and technical sites have been sold off but the airfield is still used today for exercises. |
