History
Their was an airfield at Feltwell in WWI, but construction of the bomber station with it's five 'C' hangars and early expansion architecture was begun in 1936. The original Harrows were soon replaced by Wellingtons. Sgt Ward was awarded the VC for climbing out onto the wing of a Wellington to extiguish a fire. Venturas replaced the Wellingtons. From 1943 to the end of the war Feltwell was used by the Bombing Development Unit. Post war Feltwell was occupied by No 3 Flying Training Shool until it became a Thor missile base. Now it is used as a school for the children of American servicemen and as a deep space tracking centre. |
